This epidemic that broke out like swarm of locusts so much caught majority unawares. It seemed like the age had come when the human race would finally be wiped out as fear gripped the hearts of many. That most legacies would sink in this ocean of misfortune was too true to behold. The big question was- when will it end? Never before had the whole world been confronted with such an enigma, our generation had been fazed with its doom. What a pity!

I am quite sure that a few years ago and what I have written would be the confessions of a concerned clergyman. Well, hope that seemed lost has now been regained, faith has been restored. What do I mean? Before I let the cat out of the bag, let me give you a rundown on the subject-matter.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that destroys the body’s immune system. Wave upon wave, attack upon attack, it does not stop until overtime; it has developed into full-blown AIDS. People living with HIV show some early signs and symptoms that raise suspicions. Such signs include; coughing, headache, fatigue, fever and gradual weight loss. It is greatly recommended you know your HIV status so as to combat it before it develops into full-blown AIDS.

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a situation in which the body’s immunity has been broken down to more or less an irredeemable point. This is not to say miracles do not happen. Victims of AIDS are prone to all forms of diseases because the body’s chief immunity cells have been largely reduced in number. These cells are called the CD-4 cells and are at the centre of control of all forms of immunity in our bodies. This is not to stigmatize people living with HIV or AIDS. The fact still remains with life, comes hope. There has always been hope and there will always be hope.

You have probably heard about the findings of a group of scientists in Thailand. These scientists carried out the test of a newly developed HIV vaccine on a group of about 16 000 volunteers. It was discovered that of the 16 000, approximately 1/3 of the population developed no virus- about 31%. Since the outbreak of the notorious HIV, every attempt made at vaccination has only proven abortive and the probable success recorded by these scientists has not just shattered our doubts but given us a reservoir of hope that we can always drink from.

Though we still have miles to trek, we can now comfortably sit down on our couches and watch as this endemic virus is kicked out for good- perhaps, a stepping stone to other important discoveries. As I pen down, I hope you have gained a thing or two from this write-up. In any case, you should know that it has been my pleasure serving you.
